As I was milling around getting coffee (Starbucks) I met a guy from Virginia Beach...and he remembered meeting me two years ago. He is out west doing some off road riding and rode 450 miles off road yesterday. That makes our rides look like child's play.
We met a woman from New York who is on a two month solo motorcycle ride.
Nevada has a program to recognize anyone who rides US 50 across the state. We had to stop in each town (5) and get our "passports" stamped. The towns are 75 to 110 miles apart so we were happy to have an excuse to get off the bikes.
The weather today was right out of a Chamber of Commerce ad. There was not a cloud in the sky. When we left Ely it was about 68F and only warmed to about 85. Even the wind was moderate. Although there were some 10 mile stretches of straight road we had enough curves in the hills to keep it interesting. Bobby found that his bike will go 135mph, mine hit 115. We usually cruised at about 80 and only attracted attention once when an approaching black SUV turned out to have A plethora of flashing red and blue lights. That was his way of telling me to slow down...no stop, no ticket...just a friendly reminder. I grew to appreciate that about an hour later when we were in some 70mph sweepers and suddenly a huge deer leapt down from a 20 ft embankment and ran across the road, right in front of Bobby. Bobby hit the brakes hard, his ABS kicked in, and he missed the deer by mere feet. I saw all this happen and it was over in an instant. We continued on at a more moderate pace.
Our goal for the night was Reno, where I am now. We checked In
to a casino/hotel for $29 per night. The beer is cheap and the pool is inviting. Life is good indeed!
Just got back from the pool. Life does not get much better than this...ride motorcycles all day, eat good food, drink good beer, repeat. For dinner we went to a fantastic Mexican place Mark knew of through his brother. The food was wonderful and they gave us pitchers of Drinks at a happy hour price. We took a cab both ways.
Looks like 235 miles for tomorrow, an easy day. My cold seems t.o be getting better, it sure is a drag sneezing in a helmet!
