Nothing Happened Today, 18 June 2011

Mark says that nothing happened today.

You be the judge.
Actually, it was a rather eventful day, culminating in the West Coast Ducati Madness banquet. But, we are getting ahead of the story.
Peter stayed at the fort while Bob and Mark went out into Indian territory on their bikes. Bob needed to get out his official BMW duct tape ($89/roll) to tape down his charger wiring, much to the amusement of the Italians.
Heading north out of Weaverville on Route 3, beautiful lakes and rivers were noted in between the hairpin turns. We decided to take a loop route, turning west onto an unmarked road at Etna (where we came across this classic car - a Kaiser?) This turned out to be a real goat path for 2/3 of the way. We were amazed to find a little post office in each of the "towns" of Sawyers Bar and Forks of Salmon. This loop would normally take about 2 hours to make. And, once you get to Cecilville, the road turns out to be wide enough for two vehicles (unlike the goat path) and is beautifully paved. So, we we able to pick up the pace as we headed toward Callahan and Rt 3 . It was around one of the curves where we encountered a car pulled over next to a crashed motorcycle. Without going into a lot of detail, we're happy to report that Sam improved over the hour we spent with him until the ambulance arrived. We thanked Sarah (pictured with Mark and Bob) and her girlfriends for stopping to assist a down motorcyclist. One of them had already took off in a car for the nearest town to notify 911 by the time we arrived on the scene. There was no cell phone service where we were. Sam had failed to negotiate a relatively easy curve on his Harley Sportster ... Probably target fixated on the gravel rather than on his way around the curve.
We got back to Weaverville in time to clean up and join the group for the group photo. Then off to the restaurant for our banquet via the only taxi in town. The taxi was a retired 2003 Crown Vic police car with dual spotlights. I looked for but was unable to find the siren.
After the banquet, it was back to downtown Weaverville to patronize the two bars. Things got interesting when the bachelorette party arrived. They were feeling very little pain at Bar 1 and absolutely no pain at Bar 2. We did meet a probation officer, who did show me her badge. Unfortunately, I had left mine at home.
She should work for the tourism bureau as she did go out of her way to make us visitors feel welcome, especially Peter. Just kidding, Sara.
