1 June, ready for shakedown

I think I have everything packed for California. The shakedown trip to West Virginia starts in the morning. Somehow I have lots of room for more stuff. That is a bad sign because the natural tendency
Is to fill that void. I am resisting! Today it is 96F and steamy. In the morning I expect near 70 so I intend to dress for moderate temps...light jeans under riding pants, nylon shirt under riding jacket. Just to be safe I have a hydration pack ready for ice water and an evaporative cooling vest. Don't think I will need either. Although this is a 300 mile ride each way it will be out in the country where it is cooler and I will be going up in elevation, so cooler still. I will return to Portsmouth on Sunday and leave again on Friday...for California.

It is always a bad idea to leave on a trip with untested gear. Nevertheless, I am packing a new iPad and new camera. The iPad seems to be that perfect compromise between size and function. After a few weeks of ownership I can load photos and post to the blog.....that was the requirement and my friendly Apple guys showed me how to make it all work. While we were at I found that I can now do some route planning and thus not pack a hard copy map. As insurance I got a hard case for what is becoming a critical bit of gear.

Why Marlinton? This is the 5th or 6th annual gathering of Ducati sport touring riders on the East Coast. We call it East Coast Madness. I started this and ran it for the first couple years. It is a great way to see some old friends, ride wonderful roads, and get away from the congestion of where I live. Our base is The Old Clark Inn, a B&B that caters to motorcycle groups. Tomorrow I will have some photos to share.
